Used Oil Recycling Depot opens in Cache Creek
• NewsWe are pleased to announce the official opening of the new oil recycling centre at the Boston Flats Eco-Depot, located at 1180 Campbell Hill Drive East, in Cache Creek.
The new oil recycling centre features a modified, 20 ft sea container for oil collection and four 1,000 litre intermediate bulk containers (IBC tanks) for antifreeze collection. This new infrastructure ensures the residents of Cache Creek and surrounding areas, have a clean, safe, ecologically friendly facility to return used oil and antifreeze materials and packaging.
“Our team at BCUOMA worked closely with the staff at the Thompson Nicola Regional District to design and build an easy to access facility for the public to access at no cost,” said David Lawes, CEO, BC Used Oil Management Association. “Providing this service to the people of Cache Creek and surrounding communities will go a long way to keeping used oil and antifreeze products and packaging out of landfill and the environment.”
Used oil is a valuable resource and if it is recycled at one of BCUOMA’s dedicated public recycling centres it can be recovered and re-used. Used oil can be re-refined into new lubricating oil or material inputs for manufacturing or energy products. Additionally, used oil filters contain metal, which is recycled into metal products like rebar, nails, and wire. Used oil and antifreeze containers are recycled and used to manufacture new oil containers, drainage tiles, and parking curbs. Used antifreeze is refined and reused as new automotive antifreeze.
“The addition of the used oil recycling centre to the Boston Flats Eco-Depot expands the District’s ability to remove toxic recyclables from the landfill stream and redirect them to environmentally positive ones,” said Curran Chrunik, Operations Supervisor of Solid Waste & Recycling, Thompson Nicola Regional District. “This was identified as a community concern and we have effectively addressed it with a safe, clean, easy to access, free facility to redirect used oil, antifreeze, oil filters and containers.
The Boston Flats Eco-Depot is located on approximately four hectares of land at 1180 Campbell Hill Drive East, located on the east side of Highway 1 at the former chip reload plant. Operating hours of the Boston Flats Eco-Depot are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. BCUOMA would like to acknowledge that the used oil recycling depot at the Boston Flats Eco-Depot is located on the unceded, traditional territory of the Nlaka’pamux and Secwepemc Nations.
Through the BCUOMA’s Infrastructure grant program, the organization continues to seek out opportunities to upgrade or build new recycling facility locations across BC, to improve reasonable access for British Columbians to accessible and free used oil recycling centres.
