What is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)?
EPR is an environmental policy that makes producers responsible for the collection and end-of-life management of the products they put into the market. In Yukon, this applies to lubricating oil, oil filters, antifreeze, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), and automotive containers.
Under Yukon’s EPR Regulation, producers are required to ensure these products are collected and managed safely and responsibly, to help reduce environmental impacts and supporting the development of a circular economy. To meet their obligations, producers can join a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) such as Interchange Recycling, which is establishing a compliant collection and recycling system throughout the territory.
Key Features of the Yukon Program:
- Producers must register and participate in an approved program under Yukon’s Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation.
- Producers can fulfill their obligations by joining Interchange Recycling, the PRO managing used oil and antifreeze materials and automotive containers in Yukon.
- Environmental Handling Charges (EHCs), effective July 1, 2025, are paid by producers based on the volume of regulated products sold into Yukon. These fees fund the development and operation of collection infrastructure and responsible recycling services.
The goal is to ensure program materials are diverted from the environment and responsibly recycled or reprocessed into new materials. By participating, producers contribute to a cleaner Yukon and support long-term sustainability across the territory.
